Job Summary
Teal Media is seeking a Senior WordPress Backend Developer to serve as a client-facing technical lead on custom web projects. The role combines hands-on WordPress backend development with technical architecture, client collaboration, and mentorship, primarily supporting mission-driven organizations through scalable digital solutions.
The developer will lead the architecture and development of custom websites using open-source technologies, with a strong focus on WordPress themes, plugins, backend systems, and integrations. Responsibilities include leading new builds and ongoing support projects, making technical decisions, identifying risks, recommending practical solutions, and creating maintainable systems that balance technical needs with project budgets, timelines, and team capacity.
The role also requires strong client communication skills. The Senior Developer will explain technical concepts and tradeoffs clearly, provide recommendations, participate in client discussions, and collaborate with designers, frontend developers, and strategists. Additional responsibilities include mentoring developers through feedback, pairing, and code reviews, as well as participating in technical hiring and evaluation when needed.
Candidates should have 10+ years of experience with WordPress and PHP, including deep knowledge of custom themes, plugins, and WordPress architecture. Strong modern backend development skills, experience with AI-based workflows, and an agency or consulting background are required. The position is remote within the U.S. with a salary range of $115,000–$135,000, plus comprehensive benefits, generous PTO, and a flexible workplace.
