Black Canyon Consulting (BCC) is hiring a Mid-Level C++ Full Stack Developer to contribute to software projects supporting the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) within the National Institutes of Health. The position is focused on backend and application development involving C++, Python, APIs, databases, and web technologies.

The opportunity is available as a full-time position with work options in Bethesda, Maryland, or remotely.

Role Overview

The developer will work on software used within a large-scale biomedical information environment. The position involves creating reliable backend services, processing scientific data, developing APIs and developer tools, and supporting web-based applications.

Although C++ is the primary programming language, the role also involves Python and some web development. Candidates should be comfortable working across different parts of a software stack and collaborating with engineers, product specialists, security professionals, DevOps teams, and other technical stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and enhance C++ software intended to handle demanding workloads.
  • Create backend services and application interfaces using technologies such as REST and gRPC.
  • Develop reusable libraries and command-line utilities for internal engineering needs.
  • Build Python applications, packages, services, and supporting tools.
  • Work with Django-based backend systems or develop the ability to use the framework.
  • Create automated checks that verify the behavior and reliability of software.
  • Connect applications with different types of data stores, including relational systems, Cassandra, and Solr.
  • Make necessary updates to existing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript components.
  • Help maintain accessible and responsive web experiences.
  • Investigate application performance, security, and reliability concerns.
  • Take part in peer reviews and contribute ideas for improving development practices.
  • Work with teammates using Agile development methods.

Required Qualifications

A strong candidate will typically have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, physics, another technical discipline, or comparable professional experience.
  • 3 or more years of professional C++ development experience.
  • Experience creating tests for C++ applications, including unit and integration testing.
  • At least 1 year of professional Python experience.
  • Understanding of application security and accessibility considerations.
  • Experience with source-code management tools such as Git or SVN.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • A collaborative approach to problem solving.
